Disclaimer:

It's common knowledge that the only fool proof way to avoid a bear attack is to bell him before he can sneak up on you. However, despite our best efforts, we realize that it is still very likely that you will encounter un-belled bears from time to time. Studies show that there is a 60% chance of an attack and that's absolutely terrifying. I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that you can survive a bear encounter or that your family is safe. The sole purpose of this post is to share some of the industry standards for bear avoidance.

Tips:

Keep in mind that not all of these methods are for everyone. The real secret here is to just be yourself. As they say, you wouldn't take your fish to the park so don't follow a tip if it doesn't feel comfortable.

1. Take a nap. You can't run from a bear if you're tired, silly!

2. Bears always travel in two's. If you see a bear, watch out for his friend. A bear in the front almost always means a bear in the back.

3. Try not to carry loose cold cuts in your pocket. Obviously it's not possible to follow this 100% of the time, but someone with no cold cuts is much less appealing to a bear than someone with them.

4. Be careful out there.

We hope that these steps will help you all stay safe! We've worked them into our everyday lives and it seems to be working great so far. Have any other helpful (industry approved) methods? We'd love to hear about them in the comments below!

I lost both of my parents during an unexpected, unavoidable un-belled bear attack. I have no real bear-related experience, but I promised my parents I would carry out their dying wish to bell the bear that did this to our family. I'll bell every bear if I have to.
